Oakwoods CC has
enjoyed competing in the Carolina’s Golf Association’s
interclub team competition since 2006. The interclub
competition originated in 1996 in Greensboro, NC under
the guidance and initiative of Forest Oaks CC member Ben
Payne. It has grown during the past 14 years to now
include as many as 85 clubs throughout North and South
Carolina. The event features match play team competition
and fellowship between neighboring clubs for golfers in
individual and four-ball net competition.
All CGA member clubs are eligible to enter and clubs are
paired in groups of four to play home-and-home matches
during the regular season. The regular season begins in
May and concludes with the playoffs in November with
matches normally scheduled on Saturdays and/or Sundays
and do not interfere with regular club events. These
weekend events provide clubs the opportunity to play in
a Ryder Cup style team competition among twelve players
from each competing club.
Points are awarded to the winners of the two individual
and the one four-ball match in each foursome
and accumulated to determine the team winner of the
home-and-home series. Teams with the most points after
completing their group matches advance, through the
sectional and regional playoffs, until a Carolinas
Interclub Champion is determined. This year the top
four teams will compete at Pine Needles Resort in
Pinehurst during the weekend of November 7, 8 to
determine the overall champion.
Oakwoods CC is
competing in a pod involving three teams from the
immediate area, Reynolds Park, Salem Glen, and New River.
OCC finished first in group play last year with a record
of 4-1-1, and
again made the playoffs as we have done each year that
we have competed. OCC reached the semifinals during the
2007 season and losing to eventual champion, Montgomery
County CC.
The interclub
competition is open to all male golfers at Oakwoods who
are at least 21 years old and have an established
handicap not to exceed 18.4. There is no cost to the
individual, other than cart fees at the host course.
Participants for each match are selected through a
qualifying effort which is handicap-based. Participants
have only one opportunity to qualify per match and the
effort must be declared prior to the round in the OCC
Pro Shop, or with team captain Randy McCoy. OCC must file a team
roster with the interclub governing body at the
beginning of each season and periodically update it.
Thus it is important for all players to get involved
early and often.
If you would like
to know more, contact Randy McCoy,
interclub team captain.
